Dwarf Hamster Toys

The Basics
Dwarf Hamster toys are a big part of any dwarf hammy’s life.  Without toys, life can be very boring.  They not only give your hammy’s life some excitement and pleasure, but they also provide him with a much needed method to burn off all that energy bundled up inside of him.

Not only will playing with toys help him with burning his natural energy, but he’ll also be able to stay in top physical form – ready for Henrietta Hamster should she arrive anytime soon.

All kidding aside, toys are an important aspect of a hamster’s life.  It allows him to expend energy and to exercise his muscles.

But then you – as the good hamster parent – are left with the burning question of the day . . . just what types of toys do hamsters enjoy?

What he’ll love most is to do the things that come naturally to hamster.  In the wild, hamsters cover a minimum of five miles a night rummaging for food.  But as you have probably guessed by now, it does you little good just to let your furry friend run loose in a room.  He needs something to play with.  The hamster wheel or bubble ball is perfect for this activity.

Part of his play time also includes the ever present habit of gnawing or chewing.  As we’ve stated before, every hamster does this.  And not because he’s bored, hamsters continually chew because their teeth continually grow.  Hamsters don’t have teeth like the human, which emerge from above the gum line and only grow to a certain size.  Their teeth continue to grow longer.  Chewing is their way of making sure the teeth don’t get too long for their mouth.

For gnawing purposes, provide your friend with a twig or a branch.  Just be sure it’s not been treated with pesticide or other chemicals.

You may also want to place some chewing toys specifically designed for hamsters in his cage as well.  Your local pet store has a nice array (probably far too many!) from which to choose.  Your hamster will certainly thank you for this.

The Cool Stuff
Let’s talk about some of the really cool stuff you can buy for you . . . uhm, your dwarf hamster . . . to play with.  You may want to buy a dwarf hamster toy called a Hamtrac and Ball. It’s a plastic ball in which you place your dwarf hamster.  You’ve probably seen this.  He can run around without you needing to worry about him chewing any electrical cords or other hazardous objects.

But in addition to that this particular dwarf hamster toy also comes with a “track” on which the ball neatly rests.  Henry Hamster can run in the ball on the track.  And now you don’t even have to worry about him taking a tumble down the stairs.

You may still want to supervise him, however.  Some individuals who have bought this toy say that it’s just slightly too large for their dwarf hamsters.  Some have complained that the toy is too heavy for their pet to navigate around some corners.  They just get stuck.

Many people buy it to help their hamsters train for (yeah, this may sound strange if you’ve never owned a hamster before) “hamster races.”  And these seem to work well for those “in training.”

You may just want to purchase a hamster ball without the track.  If for no other time, the ball comes in handy when you’re cleaning the cage.  You can place your hamster in the ball, allowing him to run, while you clean the cage.
